Meet Wesley Alexander

Boeing/Insitu ScanEagle Commercial Chief Test Pilot | Pioneer of First-Ever Commercial UAS Flights in NAS | FAA Published Author & UAS DPE

25+ Years of Aviation Leadership

With over 25 years in aviation, I've been at the forefront of unmanned aircraft systems integration into the National Airspace System. As ScanEagle Commercial Chief Test Pilot for Boeing's Insitu subsidiary, I led the industry's most significant UAS milestones and pioneered commercial operations that set the foundation for today's drone economy.

My international aviation experience spans Japan Airlines and Korean Airlines, where I developed ab-initio pilot training programs and managed instructor teams. This foundation in traditional aviation safety and training excellence became the bedrock for my transition to unmanned systems, where I served as the FAA's primary subject matter expert for UAS NAS integration at the William J. Hughes Technical Center.

🥇 Historic "First Ever" Achievements

  • First-ever commercial UAS flight in the NAS — ScanEagle Arctic Pathfinder with ConocoPhillips, Chukchi Sea Alaska
  • First-ever BVLOS commercial UAS flight in the lower 48 states — BNSF Railway FAA Pathfinder Program
  • First-ever use of civil unmanned aircraft for fire suppression — Paradise Wildfire, Olympic Peninsula
  • First-ever FAA-approved Aircraft Flight Manual for type-certified UAS — ScanEagle RCAT (now the FAA benchmark)
  • First BVLOS flight authorization in Denmark — Under EASA SORA regulations

As a FAA Published Author of "Human Factors Investigations of Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the NAS" and UAS Designated Pilot Examiner, I've shaped the regulatory framework that governs today's commercial drone operations. My work extends beyond test piloting to include forming Boeing/Insitu's first Rapid Response Team for wildfire suppression operations.

From international airline training to cutting-edge eVTOL development at MightyFly, where I developed and executed the flight test program for two clean-sheet eVTOL aircraft and built flight training curricula from scratch, I bring unparalleled expertise in aviation safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. With 5,200+ total flight hours, including 4,500+ hours of dual instruction and 800+ UAS hours, I provide the deep experience your organization needs to navigate the complex world of commercial aviation.
